Title: Gajab Raat (Originally titled Ghooskhor Pandat)
Director: Ritesh Shah (Created and co-written by Neeraj Pandey)
Cast: Manoj Bajpayee (as Ajay Nirvit), Divya Dutta (as Suneeta Chaudhary), Akshay Oberoi (as Naveen Madhok), Saqib Saleem (as Karan Gill), Shraddha Das (as Neha Prabhu), Rajiv Gupta (as SHO Praveen Rana), Nushrratt Bharuccha (as Rosie), and Kiku Sharda (as Lovely)
Gajab Raat is a gritty, single-night crime thriller currently streaming on Netflix that leans heavily on Manoj Bajpayee’s masterclass performance to salvage an otherwise uneven screenplay.
Written by Neeraj Pandey and Deepak Venkateshan and directed by Ritesh Shah, the film starts with a breakneck, promising hook but ultimately runs out of steam in its final act.
The story unfolds over one chaotic night in Delhi as sub-inspector Ajay Nirvit, a corrupt yet hyper-efficient cop operating a lucrative overnight extortion scheme, encounters a severely injured young girl thrown out of a moving SUV in Connaught Place. What begins as a standard local police case quickly blows up into a massive institutional crisis when elite operatives from the CBI and NIA swoop in, forcing Ajay into a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game where he must choose between multi-crore bribes and a sudden call of conscience.

Manoj Bajpayee carries the entire film on his shoulders, flawlessly handling his character’s internal conflict and moral transformation while his workplace banter with Rajiv Gupta brings organic, dark humor to a tense atmosphere. The real-time urgency of the single-night setting works wonderfully in the first half, and Divya Dutta’s arrival as a cold, calculating power centre creates a truly riveting face-off.
However, once the initial intrigue settles, the film moves into highly predictable territory with twists that lack the sharp edge Neeraj Pandey is usually famous for. The stellar supporting cast—including Saqib Saleem, Kiku Sharda, Akshay Oberoi, and Nushrratt Bharuccha—is largely underutilized with one-dimensional characters, and the film ultimately settles for a safe, ordinary, and somewhat implausible resolution.
With a rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars, Gajab Raat is a perfectly watchable, middle-of-the-road thriller that is worth streaming entirely for Manoj Bajpayee’s captivating performance, provided you keep your expectations in check regarding the mystery itself.
